As the economy revives, pre-owned cars are gaining popularity
in Ahmedabad both as first-time purchases and upgrades

In signs of reviving market demand across tier 1 and tier 2 cities, used-car platform Spinny has seen rising demand across multiple cities, including Ahmedabad. For the six months between January and June 2021, Spinny has recorded a 236% increase in sales across India compared to the same 2020 period – the figures being 7,800 and 3,300, respectively.


Of the total cars sold from January 2020 to June 2021, more than 20,000 vehicles changed hands across India. Meanwhile, in 2020, the total sales stood at 9,100-plus cars.

The projected sales for 2021 based on the current growing demand is expected to be more than 35,000, with 2,000-plus cars sold every month. The higher sales numbers are dependent on the expansion of operations from 8 cities currently to around 20-25 by the end of the year.

In the case of key car models in demand, Ahmedabad buyers prefer reliable and proven cars, especially those from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Honda. The specifics – SUV: Hyundai Creta. Hatchbacks: Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. Sedans: Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Honda Amaze.

Hatchbacks are immensely popular, particularly those from Maruti Suzuki. People seeking to upgrade are choosing pre-owned cars from Hyundai and Honda, especially Hyundai Creta. Where SUVs are concerned, the most popular are Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport and Hyundai Creta. For hatchbacks, it is the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Elite i20 and Renault Kwid. In sedans, Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Dzire are the top sellers.

Another interesting trend relates to gender. Last year, 20% of Spinny buyers in India were women. In the last six months of 2021, women car buyers stand at almost 30%, which is much higher than the nationwide average of 11%.  Meanwhile, the age group has remained constant with 25-35-year olds accounting for most of the buyers while those in their 30s and 40s are usually looking to upgrade cars. Earlier this year, a clear-cut increase in the demand for compact SUVs from women was observed – 34% month-on-month demand growth from women for compact SUVs in the price range of Rs6-8 lakhs.

When it comes to fuel preferences, people prefer buying petrol cars due to the diesel scrappage policy, with 75% of Spinny buyers opting for petrol used cars. Diesel cars account for 23% of the total cars sold. Manual transmission is preferred in major cities, with up to 90% of buyers opting for the same.

Most buyers are purchasing cars for family use. Consequently, many are buying larger cars such as SUVs and sedans as they aim to upgrade cars to suit their family needs better.

Customers are also inclined towards taking home test drives with almost 80% of buyers choosing this along with the home delivery process as the preferred car-buying choice. Customers are also booking their cars online – an entirely new way of purchasing vehicles.
